Living with the 3 Highs

High Blood Pressure, High Blood Sugar & High Cholesterol

In Singapore, the “3 Highs” — high blood pressure (hypertension), high blood sugar (diabetes), and high cholesterol (hyperlipidemia) – are among the most common chronic conditions affecting adults. Left unmanaged, they increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, kidney failure, and other life-altering complications.

The good news? These conditions are manageable — and often preventable — with the right lifestyle changes, early detection, and family support.

At our clinic, we’re here to help you take control of your health.

What Are the 3 Highs

High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

Often symptomless, hypertension silently damages your blood vessels over time. It increases your risk of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney problems.

Target Blood Pressure Goals

Your personal target may vary depending on your age, risk factors, and medical history. But general recommendations include:

Condition

Target Blood Pressure

General adult population

<130/80 mmHg

With diabetes or kidney disease

<130/80 mmHg (stricter control)

Age 65 and above

<140/90 mmHg (to reduce falls risk)

History of heart disease or stroke

<130/80 mmHg

We’ll work with you to decide on a safe and achievable goal that balances your needs and lifestyle.

Type 2 diabetes is increasingly common and can lead to nerve damage, vision loss, and poor wound healing. But with proper care, you can keep your sugar levels in check.

Types of Blood Sugar Tests

There are different ways to measure blood sugar. Here are the most common:

Test

What it Measures

Fasting Blood Glucose

Blood sugar after at least 8 hours without eating

Random Blood Glucose

Blood sugar at any point during the day

HbA1c (Glycated Hemoglobin)

Your average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months

What Are the Target Levels?

For most adults with diabetes or prediabetes, these are the general goals:

Test

Target Range

Notes

Fasting Blood Glucose

Any (2– or 3-dose)

Upon waking or before meals

2-Hour Post-Meal Glucose

<10.0 mmol/L (ideally <7.8)

Measured 2 hours after starting a meal

HbA1c (Glycated Hemoglobin)

<7.0% (53 mmol/mol)

Tighter control (≤6.5%) may be advised in some

Random Blood Glucose

<11.1 mmol/L

Used as a screening or emergency measure

Early detection here is crucial — prediabetes is reversible with lifestyle changes.

High cholesterol can clog your arteries, leading to heart disease. Regular screening and healthy eating can go a long way in managing this condition.
